
Making IP66 Infrared Heaters Actually Safe
When we build outdoor heaters with an IP66 rating, we’re basically making sure they can take a beating from the rain and splashes without hurting anyone. But if you’re putting these in a nursery or a bathroom, the water isn’t the only thing you have to worry about. The real trick is the light.
The glare problem
Most short-wave infrared lamps are blinding. They blast out a ton of visible light, which is fine for a warehouse, but way too intense for a baby’s developing eyes. We fix this by using a special filter or a doped quartz envelope. It shifts the light peak. You still get that deep, cozy heat that warms a person up instantly, but the blinding glare is gone. Sure, filtering the light drops the thermal efficiency a tiny bit, but it’s a trade-off we’re happy to make to keep eyes safe.
Keeping it dry without frying the wires
An IP66 rating means the unit is dust-tight and can handle a powerful jet of water. We use tempered glass and high-temp silicone gaskets to lock everything down. But here’s the thing: you can’t just seal a heater in a box and hope for the best. If the heat has nowhere to go, the internal wiring will literally cook itself. We spend a lot of time tweaking the housing’s thermal footprint. It lets the electronics breathe while the heating element is cranking at full blast.
A few tips for installation
When you’re wiring these in, keep an eye on your circuit. These lamps pull a lot of power right at the start. If your voltage dips, that “soft light” effect we worked so hard on can drift, and the heat becomes inconsistent. My advice? Run dedicated lines for high-wattage setups. And one last thing—don’t cheap out on the mounting brackets. Between the IP-rated casing and the heavy protective glass, these units weigh more than you’d think. Make sure they’re anchored well.
