The “Drop-In” Fix We went with a modular setup. Instead of soldering everything into one permanent, untouchable block, we used slide-out brackets and easy-to-reach terminals. If a tube burns out, you don’t have to spend your entire Saturday tearing down your pergola canopy. You just unplug the module, slide out the dead tube, and pop in a fresh one. It takes minutes, not hours. It’s as simple as changing a lightbulb. The Rain Problem Keeping water out while letting heat escape is a tricky balance. If you seal a heater airtight to stop the rain, the electronics basically bake themselves alive. Our approach? We use IP-rated seals on the electrical junctions to keep the rain out, but we let the rest of the chassis breathe. We designed the frame to shed water using gravity, so the internals stay dry but the air keeps moving. The Trade-off Now, here is the honest part. Because our design has more connection points than a solid welded unit, it requires a little bit of love. Wind vibrates. Pergolas shift. Over time, a screw might wiggle loose. We use high-temp, vibration-resistant fasteners to stop this from happening, but you still need to give your terminals a quick once-over during your first annual service. Just a quick check to make sure everything is tight. It’s a small price to pay. By separating the heating element from the frame, you aren’t buying a disposable appliance.
