
Why Your Towel Rail Actually Dies (And How We Fixed It)
Ever wonder why some towel rail heaters just… give up? Most people think the heating element burns out. But that’s usually not what’s happening. The real killer is the lead-in wire. In these infrared systems, there’s a specific spot where the electrical wire meets the quartz tube. It’s a thermal bottleneck. If that seal isn’t perfect, heat starts creeping backward into the wiring. It basically slow-cooks the insulation until it’s brittle and useless.
The problem with “cheap” seals
A lot of generic assemblies rely on basic glues or gaskets that don’t quite fit. Here’s the thing: these rails heat up and cool down hundreds of times. That constant expanding and contracting eventually pulls those cheap seals apart. Once a tiny gap opens, oxygen gets in. Then comes the oxidation, then the carbonization. Before you know it, the insulation cracks, the wires touch, and—pop—your unit shorts out. We do things differently. We use high-temp silicone potting and precision-crimped ferrules to create a total barrier. It keeps the heat exactly where it belongs—in the radiation zone—and far away from the electronics.
The “Breathing” Effect
If you look at a generic build, they usually skip vacuum-sealing. We use a compressed-fit seal that handles the different ways glass and copper expand. It’s a tight fit. Why? Because it stops the seal from “breathing.” Without this, the unit actually sucks in moist air as it cools and pushes it out as it heats. If your rails are in a steamy bathroom, that moisture eats through PVC or silicone jackets way faster.
One quick tip for installation
There is a trade-off for this kind of durability. Because the seal is so robust, the wire is a bit more rigid right near the tube. You can’t just bend it at a sharp angle. If you force a tight curve during install, you might stress the seal and create a leak. Just give the wires a nice, gradual curve. Your heater will thank you for it.
