
Getting Your IR Lamp Voltage Right
If you’re running glass finishing ovens, you already know that heat is everything. Whether you’re tempering, bending, or annealing, your thermal profile has to be spot on. But there’s a boring detail that can ruin your whole day: voltage. If your heating lamp doesn’t match your plant’s power grid, you’re looking at one of two things: a lamp that burns out way too fast, or one that just can’t get the glass hot enough. We build our infrared lamps to fit whatever you’re working with—usually 110V, 480V, or 575V.
The Danger of “Close Enough”
Playing fast and loose with voltage is a great way to blow a fuse. If you plug a 110V lamp into a 480V line, it’s going to pop almost instantly. On the flip side, if you try to run a high-voltage tube on a low-voltage circuit, it’ll just sit there. You won’t hit the surface temperature you need, and your production slows to a crawl. To stop that from happening, we tweak the length and thickness of the filament. This keeps the wattage steady, no matter what your input is. For those 480V and 575V setups, we use specific alloys that can take the electrical stress without wrecking the quartz envelope. It means you get consistent, heavy heat across the entire sheet of glass. No cold spots. No guesswork.
Making it Fit
We use high-purity quartz glass because it lets the IR transmission flow through without any interference. The best part? These are designed as drop-in replacements. You shouldn’t have to rebuild your entire oven bank just to swap a lamp. We offer a bunch of different connector types, so you can just wire them up and get back to work without messing with your chassis. Plus, because we customize the voltage, you can skip those bulky, expensive step-down transformers. Your electrical cabinet stays smaller, and you have one less piece of gear that could break down in the middle of a shift.
A Few Things to Watch Out For
Here’s the trade-off. High-voltage lamps (480V and up) are great because they draw less current for the same amount of power. That lets you use thinner wiring, which is a win. But there’s a catch. Higher voltage means a higher risk of electrical arcing. If your insulators are worn out or caked in glass dust, you’ve got a problem. Keep your contacts clean. And one last tip: if you’re pushing a ton of wattage into a compact oven, check your cooling fans. If they aren’t up to the task, the ambient heat will build up and melt your lamp sockets. Not a fun way to spend a Tuesday.
