Between the rain, the wind, and that annoying grit that gets everywhere, most electronics just don’t stand a chance. That’s why we build our garden heaters to IP65 standards. It sounds like a boring technical code, but in plain English? It means your heater won’t fry the first time a storm rolls through.
Keeping the Gunk Out
The “6” in IP65 is all about the dust. We use gaskets with tight tolerances and sealed cable entries to make sure grit doesn’t sneak into the reflector housing. Here is the problem: if dust settles on a quartz tube, it creates these little “hot spots.” Those spots get way too hot, way too fast, and—pop—your tube fails. Keeping it dust-tight isn’t just about cleanliness; it’s about making sure the thing actually lasts.
Dealing with the Rain
Then there’s the “5.” This part is about water. We’ve shaped the housing to deflect rain and splashes from pretty much any angle. We also pack silicone seals around the wiring ports and use specialized gaskets where the heating element meets the frame. Without these, moisture seeps right into the electrical terminals. That leads to corrosion or, worse, a dead short that kills the unit instantly.
The Silent Killer: Fog
Rain is obvious, but fog is the sneaky one. When your heater cools down in humid air, condensation forms on the inside. If water beads up on that quartz tube, the glass expands unevenly as it heats back up. That’s how you get cracks. To stop that, we added a drainage path and a breathable vent. It lets the internal air equalize so the reflectors stay clear and the elements stay dry, all without letting the rain in.
A Quick Heads-Up on Heat
There is a trade-off here. Because we’ve sealed the unit so tight to keep the water out, the heat stays trapped inside longer than it would in a cheap, open-frame heater. **This is important:**Give your heater some breathing room. If you tuck it into a tight, cramped corner, that “heat soak” can actually melt the insulation on your internal wiring. Stick with high-temp leads and make sure there’s plenty of airflow around the mounting bracket. Your wiring will thank you.
