
Getting Your Bathroom Heater Wattage Right
Ever stepped into a bathroom and felt that sudden, annoying chill? Or maybe you’ve used a heater that feels like a heat lamp at a buffet—scorching in one spot and freezing everywhere else. That usually happens because the wattage doesn’t match the room. We use shortwave infrared tech here. Unlike a standard space heater that tries to warm up all the air in the room (which takes forever), these lamps heat you and your surroundings directly. It’s basically instant.
How much power do you actually need?
It really comes down to how much space you’re trying to cover. If you’ve got a tiny powder room, a single 400W to 600W lamp is usually plenty. But if you’re dealing with a big master bath, you can’t rely on just one bulb. You’ll want a few lamps working together—something in the 1000W to 1500W range—so the warmth feels even across the room. Here’s the trick: don’t just go for the highest wattage you can find. If you overdo it, the fixture can get too hot and burn the lamp out early. On the flip side, if the wattage is too low, the lamp has to run at full blast 24/7 just to keep up. That’s a great way to kill the filament.
The nitty-gritty on the hardware
We use quartz glass and halogen gas in our units. It sounds technical, but all it means is that the filament can get plenty hot without wearing itself out. We also stick with R7s or SK15 connectors. Why? Because nobody wants to replace an entire ceiling fixture just because a bulb popped. These are simple drop-in replacements. You swap the tube, and you’re back in the warmth in about thirty seconds.
Finding the sweet spot
High-wattage lamps are powerful. They’re great if you want to feel the heat the second you flip the switch. But there’s a catch. You end up with “hot zones.” You’ll feel like you’re standing under a summer sun directly beneath the lamp, while the corners of the room stay chilly. The better way to do it? Use a few lower-wattage lamps spread across the ceiling. It spreads the warmth around more naturally and keeps the fixtures from overheating. It’s a much more comfortable way to wake up in the morning.
