Scaling a lamp up to over 3 meters isn’t as simple as just making it longer. You run into voltage drops and thermal expansion that can wreck your equipment. We push the wattage density high to keep that surface temperature steady. But here’s the catch: a tube that long wants to bow or even snap under its own weight. To stop that, we use reinforced quartz. And a quick tip on your power supply—keep it balanced. If the current isn’t distributed evenly across that 3-meter stretch, you’ll get hotspots. And hotspots lead to burnouts. Fast.
The nuts and bolts of the quartz
We use high-purity quartz because it lets the infrared light through without fighting it. For Low-E work, we actually tune the wavelength so the glass absorbs the heat exactly where it needs to. These aren’t your run-of-the-mill bulbs. We customize how the filament is wound so the heat feels the same from one end to the other. We also use heavy-duty connectors. Trust me, you don’t want your housing melting because the connectors couldn’t handle the load.
The real-world trade-offs
Going with these long-format lamps makes your life easier in a few ways. You can cut down on the number of heating zones, which means way less wiring and a smaller footprint for your lehr. It’s a cleaner setup. But it’s not all sunshine. Since one 3-meter unit is a single point of failure, your maintenance changes. Make sure your cooling system is beefy enough to handle it, or you’re going to have a very hot room and a very unhappy crew.
