
How to Actually Size Infrared Heaters for Bathroom Mirrors
Ever stepped out of a hot shower and spent five minutes wiping a circle into your mirror with a towel just to see your face? It’s a pain. The fix is pretty simple: we use short-wave infrared lamps to warm up the glass. If the mirror is warmer than the steamy air in the room, the fog just doesn’t stick. But there’s a trick to it. You want the glass warm enough to stay clear, but not so hot that you risk cracking the mirror or wasting a ton of electricity.
Finding the Right Wattage
You can’t just grab any heater and hope for the best. A tiny mirror in a half-bath doesn’t need nearly as much juice as a massive floor-to-ceiling mirror in a master suite. It all comes down to the square footage. For those smaller mirrors, a low-wattage lamp (somewhere between 50W and 150W) usually does the trick. It’s a gentle heat that keeps things clear. But for the big stuff? You’ll need more power or a few different lamps spread out. Otherwise, you’ll end up with “cold spots”—those annoying patches of fog that just won’t go away. Just be careful not to go overboard. If you cram too much heat into thin glass, you’re asking for trouble.
The Trade-offs
Here’s the thing: more wattage means the mirror clears up faster. That sounds great, right? But there’s a catch. All that extra heat has to go somewhere. It leaks into the frame and the wall. If you’re stuffing a high-powered lamp into a tight space with no airflow, the heat builds up. Over time, that can actually ruin the silver coating on the back of your mirror. I always suggest using a timer or a thermostat. You don’t need the heater running all day. You just need it to hit that sweet spot where the fog vanishes, and then it can shut off.
Setting It Up
When you’re planning the layout, put the lamps right behind the area where people actually look. I recommend quartz-halogen tubes because they heat up almost instantly. Also, make sure your wiring can handle a continuous load so you aren’t tripping breakers. If you’re using multiple lamps, stagger them. It spreads the heat out evenly so the whole mirror feels consistent.
